Column published today in LDR:
Have you seen the latest credit card commercial which has the tag line “what if people really said what they meant?”
It is a good illustration of the term hypocrisy, which seems to be a growing trend in our culture today.
Hypocrisy is an interesting word. In its most simple form, it refers to an actor. In our modern day use and understanding it is the practice of claiming to have moral standards or beliefs to which one's own behavior does not conform.
We have all seen the theatrical masks representing comedy and tragedy. Masks such as these were used by actors in Greek and Roman plays so the audience would know what part the actor was playing. Hypocrisy is just wearing a mask to conceal one’s true identity, which is what is happening today in government.
Getting back to the credit card commercial, and the hypocrisy which has become the very essence of current politics, let’s examine the “what if people really said what they meant?” philosophy.
Hillary Clinton would have to admit that her hypocritical concern and loving sympathy for children is all a farce. It is conditional upon whether she believes in her seeming infinite wisdom that certain children have rights but that others do not.
Her financial and ideological support of Planned Parenthood and its practice of dismembering babies for sale to the highest bidder belies anything she actually says about loving all children.
I was watching NBC’s Meet The Press on April 3 of this year when she said “The unborn person doesn’t have constitutional rights.” And if you don’t want to take my word for it, you can document it by doing your own research. She said it again onThe View just two days later.
It is clear that Hillary believes that her daughter and two grandchildren, as well as the son of her “joined at the hip” compatriot Huma Abedin, had the right to life before and after they were born. But she would argue against the young women who come to the Pregnancy Center here in Lebanon right across the street from me for assistance in their pregnancies and giving their unborn babies the right to live. (I can say that without fear of contradiction because if she wanted to save all babies from abortion she would fund Pregnancy centers instead of Planned Parenthood.)
Hillary’s alleged concern for children doesn’t extend to their first nine months of life in the womb.
The second major issue in her campaign is her support for women. We’re all familiar with her comment “deal me in on the woman card”. But 100% of the people who have abortions are female, and at least 50% of those aborted babies are female. Hypocrisy again.
And lastly, she says she is concerned about minorities and wants to help them. Another hypocrisy. According to the Alan Guttmacher Institute, black women are more than 5 times as likely as white women to have an abortion. One statistic I read said that on average, 1,876 black babies are aborted every day in the United States. (Three strikes and you should be out, Hillary.)
There is more hypocrisy in our government. There is a department under Health & Human Services called The Office of Refugee Resettlement which is set up to help incoming refugees. HHS says it provides these refugees with critical “resources” to assist them in becoming integrated members of American society. What it really means is we give them cash, plus welfare benefits and food stamps, plus free medical care.
Now don’t get me wrong. I am all for helping those in need. But the fact is that our country has many people already here who are in need. The priority for financial assistance, medical care, and food and shelter should always be for our veterans, those who fought for this country. The U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) estimates that 39,471 veterans are homeless on any given night.
About 1.4 million other veterans are considered at risk of homelessness due to poverty, lack of support networks, and dismal living conditions in overcrowded or substandard housing.
Nearly half of homeless veterans served during the Vietnam era. Two-thirds served our country for at least three years, and one-third were stationed in a war zone.
And 45% of all homeless veterans are African American or Hispanic, which just screams “hypocrisy” in an administration which claims to be the political party which is so much more concerned about minorities than that “other party”.
Michelle Obama supposedly supports military families. This is one of her “causes” as First Lady, but have you ever heard her speak out about our veterans’ needs? Hypocrisy.
Our citizenry also includes senior citizens who are living in poverty, especially elderly women who lived in a time when women didn’t work outside the home so their social security checks on their husbands’ benefits don’t begin to cover their basic needs.
Then there are the vulnerable children and teens. There are kids in Lebanon who don’t get enough to eat, and who don’t know where they are going to sleep on any given night.
Our own people should come first. And since our country has massive debt and Congress says there are no funds available to help our own, why should we be giving assistance to refugees, some of which may be plotting our destruction? Government officials say there are too many to vet. Why don’t we vet them when we sign them up for free benefits? The answer is simple - hypocrisy.
Our government agencies make it easy to sound like they care, but behind the masks, it is just another way to pander to people for political reasons. If they said what they meant they would run a commercial on TV with the White House in the background and a voice-over saying “We will give you free stuff and support you for the rest of your life if you will give us your vote.”
